About Canterbury Swim School

Canterbury Swim School is a leading provider of quality swimming lessons in the Christchurch area and operates from a purpose built facility known as the Waitaha Aquatic Centre.

The Swim School and Centre were established in July 2013 by nationally experienced and accredited coaches, Huia Mikara and Jenny Jones, and businessman, Chris Hurley who recognised the western area of Christchurch had been about as dry as the proverbial desert for a long time; there wasn’t a sizeable indoor aquatic facility in the area available to local residents. They decided to end the drought by building the Waitaha Aquatic Centre and making it available to the local community.

Huia and Jenny have 50 years of coaching between them through their involvement with local swim clubs, Templeton Hospital, Templeton Primary School, and McKenzie Residential School, teaching and coaching swimmers from learn to swim levels right through to Open national and international level and have been committed to swimming and assisting youth in the community for many years.

In 2015 Huia and Jenny were presented Service Awards by Swimming New Zealand in recognition of their outstanding contribution over many years to swimming.
