Stroke clinics – what are they?

For the first time we started offering specialist stroke clinics. These are now taking place during the school holidays.

We usually provide holiday programmes with daily lessons over the course of the week, and still, do. But we felt we still needed to do something more. We could see some swimmers had issues with a particular stroke and maybe just not ‘getting it’. Most of the time it just takes that little bit more attention on a specific aspect so swimmers could move up to the next level or feel more confident.

For example, breaststroke kick can be really difficult to master – it’s one of those things that either comes naturally or it doesn’t, and if it doesn’t (which is the case for many of us) it can take time to get it right. We certainly focus on breaststroke kick during our weekly lessons, but a 30-minute lesson covering all 4 competitive strokes, means only a certain amount of time can be spent on one area.

The stroke clinics allow us to spend a whole hour on just one stroke. And they’re working out great! So far we’ve had one on diving and turns, and another on butterfly. On Tuesday 22nd we’re having a clinic on freestyle/backstroke, and on Thursday 24th January we’ve another on breaststroke.

We’re really looking forward to seeing how much the swimmers’ improve during these two sessions. It’s always fantastic to see children coming away from a lesson looking happy and pleased with themselves – and so they should, they’ve worked really hard!

The feedback we’ve had has been really positive so we’ll certainly be putting on more of these types of clinics in the future.
